Red letter day is an idiom which talks about a day that went fairly well or a day that'd be memorable for you.

[ I just read this story( the girl at the window) so the answer may not be precise ]

It's quoted like this :-

" That was a red-letter day for Totto-chan. It was the first time she had ever swum in a

pool. And without a stitch on! "

So the memorable day for tottochan was the day their teacher told them that they'd be swimming since the weather's turned hot outside . All the students were excited to swim as they hadn't swam ever before ( not sure about this line but the story did say that this was first time for tottochan ).

" What fun, thought Totto-chan, and what a lovely feeling! "
