tough days do not last but tough people do- is indeed a statement which explains the life of the two noble souls. Nicola and jacopo had always lived a comfortable life but war snatched away all of their comfort and exposed them to a life of want and misery but still these heroes did not give up. they holded on to that "never say die spirit" that their parents gave to them. they considered no work to be menial and as narrator even mentions that he could not reconcile to such versatility of professions.they faced the problems with all the strength they had and always succeeded at winning the heart of people- the hospital staff and narrator.
these heroes were fighting to bring back normalcy in the life of their tuberculosis afflicted sister. I certainly think that these noble souls will be successful because as it is mentioned above tough days do not last but tough people do.
