- The history of Indian towns or urbanization in India is rooted in the Harappan civilization. Town planning was extremely professional with the city divided into parts and houses very well constructed. The streets were adjoining at right angles and brick houses were introduced. Every detail in their urban planning was phenomenal and their methods are being used until today.
- Major towns flourished in the medieval times and during the British rule. The cities most influenced by the Mughals are Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, etc. Whereas, Goa, Chennai and Kolkata were influenced by the British rulers.
- The urban towns have grown vastly after independence. Majority of the rural population has moved to cities and towns increasing urbanization. The formation of states, their capital cities and union territories have brought about a new range of growth. Today, towns have come a long way and have developed to a large extent.
