Toxic rain which results when noxious gases released into the atmosphere and mix with water molecules is called acid rain.

When the toxic compounds like nitrogen oxides or sulfur dioxide are released to the air, they rise high above and then mix with water, oxygen and few other chemicals which are present in the higher layers of the atmosphere.

Upon mixing, they form acidic pollutants which fall down as acid rain.
