Hegel was a formative influence of Marxism while Althusser, through structuralism, transformed it into its contemporary form.

Explanation:

Hegel's dialectic method of reasoning was the basis of the work of Marx. Marx takes it from the purview of idealism to one of materialism and forming the basic tenets of Marxist ideology.

Althusser came along when Marxist  thought was already well established and questioned the nature of ideology itself.

For him, to have an ideology was to narrow many things down to a single worldview and thus he used this to contend the Marxist materialistic thought.
