According to me a mature female gametophyte has 7 cells. A female gametophyte has three celled egg apparatus i.e. one egg cell and two synergids, three antipodal cells and two polar nuclei. The polar nuclei fuse to produce a diploid secondary nucleus. Each pollen tube contains two male gamete.one of them fuse with the egg cell to produce a zygote while the other fuse with the secondary nucleus to produce a triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). Because of occurrence of two fusions, this event is known as double fertilization.
