Political parties were first established in Russia by the working class and farmers in the 1800s. Poor living conditions, hunger and high taxes prompted them to group together as political parties. Soon, when such parties were formed, the middle class and nobility joined together to form their own political parties.
Bolsheviks and Mensheviks emerged from the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1903, as a result of disagreement between leading communists Vladimir Lenin and Julius Martov. Those favouring Lenin came to be known as Bolsheviks while those who stood behind Martov were the Mensheviks.
