It is essential to have a brief historical suirvey of the origin, growth and development of party system in the state of Jammu and Kashmir especially of the National Conference. The State was from 1846 to 1947 ruled by Dogras.

The state of jandk ,as it exists today, is the creation of Maharaja gulab singh who led the foundation of the state . Since the early 20th century, a change was seen in the form of political awakening .the first political organization made its debut in Jammu in 1904 under a special permission.Till the mid 1920"s , there was apparent calm but occasionally there was a rumbling on the political horizon. In 1924 , the inadequately paid labourers of the silk factory arose in rebellion . This agitation was quietend and led to formation of all j and k muslim conference .
