Hardwoods are more complex than softwoods. All hardwoods contain, in varying amounts, vessel elements, fibers, longitudinal parenchyma and ray parenchyma. Only two cell types, longitudinal tracheids and ray parenchyma formed the greatest volume of softwoods.
