In first case crossing a pole is traveling it's own length.

Length of train ,l = 120m

Time taken to cross the pole, t = 3s

we know,

Distance= speed/ time

So speed of the train,s = 120/3 = 40m/s

Time taken to cross a 240m platform =

( length of the train + length of platform)/ speed of the train

= (120+240)/40

=360/40

=9sec

The train takes 9sec to cross the platform of length 240m
