During the time of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj, barter system i.e the exchange of goods was used for every day transactions.

Besides barter system, cash and coins were used for trade and commerce. Land revenue was mostly collected in cash. The copper coin known as Shivrais and gold coin known as Hon were issued by Shivaji.
