Transcribe cut phonetically
Answers
How do I learn to transcribe correctly in my phonetics studies?
Thanks for the A2A. This question is actually fairly easy to answer, but it will take some time to perfect your skills.
Learn the basics of the IPA. It is actually a lot less important to memorize all of the symbols than to understand the basic structure behind them: consonants: place, manner, voicing; vowels: height, backness, rounding. That’s it!
(You can always look up the symbols you don’t know, and while you’re practicing you’ll eventually memorize the ones you use often anyway.)
Listen a lot and practice transcribing. This is the main requirement. Get some feedback too!
Practice pronouncing the sounds also. This will help you understand and internalize the structure of the IPA. For most students in my phonetics class our oral midterm, where we had to pronounce a series of three random words with any mix of possible IPA symbols, was very difficult, but it was also a great way to practice and to memorize the IPA chart.
Get some good headphones!
Hope it helps you!
