Answer:

Abiotic components are non living factors in the environment which includes chemical and physical factors.

Biotic components include all the living things such as plants and animals in the environment.

Photo-degradation is the process of breakdown of complex materials into simpler one due to light exposure. The infra red rays, ultraviolet rays and visible light from the sunlight absorbs photon from the materials and make the materials to disintegrate. Even plastics also undergo photo degradation but this process will not occur suddenly. It requires much time.

Transformation of pollutants in natural water bodies means removal of pollutants in water bodies without the use of any artificial components on the water bodies. But it will not take place suddenly. The pollutants in water bodies disappear very slowly with time. The process of transformation or degradation of pollutants in natural water bodies is called self-purification or natural purification. Natural water bodies such as lakes, rivers and seas undergo self-purification process.

The transformation or degradation of pollutants in natural water bodies may be abiotic.

Option: B

Explanation:

  • Usually, the ecosystems are composed of living as well as non living organisms. Chemical reactions can be occurred in both groups.
  • Abiotic reactions can be separated and does not depend on other organisms. Here various organic compounds were degraded and transformed by other non living processes.
  • In many cases, the environmental conditions ensure both ‘biotic and abiotic’ transformations to be occurring together. Some of the processes include photolysis and hydrolysis.
