Transition elements are d-block elements, with some exceptions. Usually they are paramagnetic.
They show variable oxidation states. They and their compounds show catalytic activity.
a) Zn (atomic number = 30) is not a transition element, though it is a d block element. Why? (1)
b) Why do transition elements show variable oxidation states? (1)
c) What is the reason for their catalytic property?

Answer:
a) generally d block element have vacant d orbital and show colourfull spectrum but zinc doesn't have vacant d orbital and not able to show colour spectrum. That's why they are not transition element but lies in d block.
b)Transition elements show variable state oxidation in their compounds because there is a very small energy difference in between (n-1)d and ns orbitals. As a result, electrons of (n-1)d orbitals as well as ns-orbitals take part in bond formation.
c)two reasons
i) they show variable oxidation state
ii) they have vacant d orbital which provides surface area for reaction
