a) Let the number be = x

twice the number = 2x

13 subtracted from it = 2x - 13

it gives 3

2x - 13 = 3

Equation is 2x - 13 = 3

b) Let the number be = x

1/5 of the number = 1/5 of x = x/5

it is equal to 5 less than the number = x - 5

x/5 = x - 5

Equation is x/5 = x - 5
