Translate the following statements into chemical equations and then balance the equations:

a.) Hydrogen sulphide gas burns in air to give water and sulphur dioxide.

b.) Phosphorus burns in oxygen to give phosphorus pentoxide.

c.) Carbon disulphide burns in air to give carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide.

d.) Aluminium metal replaces iron from ferric oxide, Fe2O3, giving aluminium oxide and iron.

e.) Barium chloride reacts with zinc sulphate to give zinc chloride and barium sulphate.

a) 2H_2S_((g)) + 3O_(2(g)) -> 2SO_(2(g)) + 2H_2O_((g))

Explanation:

The unbalanced combustion reaction of hydrogen sulfide, H_2S, looks like this

H_2S_((g)) + O_(2(g)) -> SO_(2(g)) + H_2O_((g)).

b) P4+O2→P2O5 Actually phosphorus is a polyatomic substance. Its atomicity is 4 Here for the formation of 1 P2O5 molecule 2 – phosphorus atoms, 5- oxygen atoms are required. Therefore 4- phosphorus atoms will form 2 P2O5 molecules. For the formation of 2 P2O5 molecules 10 oxygen atoms are required. For balancing the equation keep 5 in front of O2 molecule P4+5O2→P2O5 .

c) According to the circumstances mentioned in the question that,carbon disulphide burns in air to give carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide.

This above mentioned statement is completely true and this phenomenon is also one of the main reasons behind today's air pollution.

Chemical equation for this reaction is:

CS2 (l) + 3O2 (g) -> CO2 (g)+ 2SO2 (g)

d) Unbalanced equation:-

Fe₂O₃ + Al       ---------> Al₂O₃ + Fe

Balanced equation:-

Fe₂O₃ + 2Al       ---------> Al₂O₃ + 2Fe

This reaction is an example of single displacement chemical reaction.

It is a chemical reaction in which one element takes place of another in a compound.

In general , a more reactive element takes place of less reactive element  from its compound.

Here ,

Aluminum  , being a more reactive metal , displaced iron , which is less reactive , from its compound , ferric oxide.

e) Barium Chloride solution reacts with Zinc sulphate solution to give zinc chloride solution and barium sulphate precipitate.

Equation is:-

BaCl2(aq)+ZnSO4(aq)-----------=>ZnCl2(s)+BaSO4(aq)

The equation is already balanced.

So, balanced equation is

BaCl2(aq)+ZnSO4(aq)-----------=>ZnCl2(s)+BaSO4(aq)

•It is double displacement reaction.

hope it helps
