22. Importance of Newspapers
We live under a government of men and morning newspapers.
The most outstanding feature of modern civilization is the
newspapers. They have become part of our daily life.
The newspaper is all-important these days. It has become a
necessity. The morning cup of tea becomes tasteless without the
newspaper. It makes us feel one with the rest of mankind. It widens
our knowledge. Human activities are increasing in every field. We
must have means to keep in touch with them. Each moming we
leave the bed with eagerness about the happenings of the past 24
hours. We want to know about the political problems, about
weather, about new releases of films, about the latest news of
various sports. The newspaper brings all these to us it is an
encyclopedia for the day.
A newspaper is more than a news-giver. It gives news as well
as views. It seeks not only to inform but also to interest, to inspire.
It tells us about the literary activities, it predicts our future. It
reports market conditions, it informs us of social events. It gives
a platform to social workers. Even with the radio and the TV, the
newspaper has the same hold over people.
The newspaper holds a great power. The pen is indeed
mightier than the sword. But the newspaper should be neutral not
prejudiced. It should be a guard of democracy and a champion
of social reforms.
But on the other hand, one will wake up without a feeling of
impeding disaster. No news of debacles in sports, no predictions of
doom by the astrologers. The world would be a better place to live
