Water is absorbed by roots from roots and it transported through xylem therefor it only goes upward . Hence it is unidirectional. But food is formed in leaves and required by both root system and shoot system of the plant. Food is transported by pholem. Hence it goes upward and downward also. Therefore it is a bi-directional.
