Answer: Transpiration is a necessary evil. A contrast in one line. It simply means transpiration is as good as it is bad for plants. We all know what happens  in transpiration i.e. loss of water from the aerial parts of the plant which should not happen. Thus, it is a evil. But then the question comes why is it necessary? We all know that xylem transports water & minerals in the plant in the upward direction from the roots but what if the water & minerals are not transported? It will pose  a great threat to the life of the plant. Phloem need energy to transport food but xylem simply needs natural physical forces to function. Transpiration creates a suction pull in the plant because of which water in the roots reaches the upper parts of the plant. In the absence of transpiration, xylem will not function properly.

Therefore, transpiration is evil but required.
