Depends on where you are going. Currently, we do use star finding to orient spacecraft: as another commenter noted, Canopus is the preferred star for this, as it is the highest/lowest above the average orbital plane of the planets around the Sun.

But the stars can tell you what way you are going, not where you are. Earth-based navigators noticed this themselves — that because they lived on a spherical planet, they could use the direction to Polaris
