Agra: Poor condition of city buses is not only causing considerable inconvenience to commuters but also creating a bad impression among visitors to Agra. Buses are not cleaned, broken seats, broken windshields and windows are common, tobacco stains can be seen everywhere and the vehicles do not have proper instructions or first aid boxes.

There are around 60 city buses plying in the city on various routes like Agra Cantt-Bhagwan Talkies, Kamla Nagar, Dayal Bagh and others. Visitors from other cities catch buses from the Agra Cantt Railway Station or from Bhagwan Talkies, but after their journey they promise to never take these buses again.

Most of the visitors expressed unhappiness and had a bad impression of the service. They suggested that Agra, being a popular tourist destination, should have better city bus service on the lines of Delhi or Jaipur.

ADVERTISEMENT Delhi resident Rani Thakur, who came along with her husband to attend a ceremony in Agra, boarded a bus from Agra Cantt Railway Station for Raja ki Mandi. She said, “Initially I did not get a seat, but when I did, I refused to sit because it was broken. I opted to keep standing because each seat was broken or dirty.”

Rani’s husband, Shyam, said the bus was packed and there were no instructions for the male passengers to refrain from taking seats reserved for women passengers. “Women were standing and men did not vacate reserved seats. My wife asked the conductor for help, but he shrugged off his responsibility,” Shyam added.

Shyam also said that the helpline numbers were unclear and when he tried to call on those numbers, nobody answered. “There should be proper instructions so that passengers in need can use those numbers,” he shared.

ADVERTISEMENT Another passenger, Shantanu Singh, at Bhagwan Talkies, said that the city’s roads were in good condition but the bus service was not. “All the buses are more than 10 years old. Their paint is faded, windshields broken and some of the seats are even supported by stones or other means,” he said.

A bus driver also expressed unhappiness and wished that there should be proper facility in the buses. “There should be proper seats for us, fire safety arrangements and other facilities,” he said.

Managing director of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Rajendra Prasad Giri said, “We are trying to improve the conditions of the buses. They will be painted and other facilities will soon be provided to passengers.”
