There was an old man sitting. He had come 12 km walking from San Carlos.
He was wearing steel rimmed spectacles and his face and clothes were gray and dirty.
There was a lot of chaos at the pontoon bridge.
The duty of the narrator was to report at the incident. The old man have to come here because of the artillery. Since he was old, he was too tired to walk any longer to save his life from the war.
