Maggie was a bed ridden girl whose mother was dead and she was left all alone in her small house.

she request Mr. Jane Thompson not to leave her all alone , and Mr. Thompson assures her that he would not leave her.

He takes her to his home where his wife rudly asks him that why did he carried this burden to his home.

Then Jane answers that his arms were strong enough to leave her to orphanage but before leaving her to orphanage he has to find her guardians for permission. But that day never came when Jane has to find Maggie's guardians since she changed the rude nature of Mrs. Thompson and bring happiness in the life of childess couple.

Joe Thompson did not see the the Guardians of the poor since he did not want Maggie to go to the poorhouse and instead wanted her to stay with him and his wife, since a bond had been formed between him and Maggie when he was carrying her in his arms from her hut to his house.

He knew how his ill-tempered wife would react and would refuse to let Maggie stay with them initially, but since Joe was an intuitive man, he knew his wife and knew that the reason for his wife's rude behavior was them being childless. So he kept Maggie in his house and his wife's affection for Maggie grew in his absence.

So he never had to go and meet the Guardians.

Maggie had turned out an angel in disguise for the Thompsons and Joe for Maggie.
