Treating of phenol with chloroform in presence of sodium hydroxide

When phenol treated with chloroform in presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide at 340 K to form 2− hydroxybenzaldehyde or salicylaldehyde.

This reaction is known as Reimer-Tiemann reaction.
