Industrial effluents can be treated in three stages – primary, secondary and tertiary.
The Primary stage consists of screening of debris, grit, oil and grease removal. This is usually achieved by allowing the effluent to settle in holding tanks. The Secondary stage, consists of removal of dissolved and suspended biological matter. The Tertiary stage is the final stage before discharge into the ecosystem. In this stage, the water may be disinfected chemically, if it has not reached the required level of purity.
Industrial effluents have to go through three different aspects in order to be treated.
The first phase is termed as the primary kind of treatment.
This incorporates the use of mechanical means like grinding, screening, sedimentation, and flocculation.
In the second phase of the treatment, the effluents have to undergo biological treatment.
The third and final stage of treatment is the tertiary treatment.
This is done by biological, physical as well as chemical means.
