as trees are pretty much stationary their entire life s , they cannot move around for food so they stay where the are and goes under which results in the formation of roots . also as a good strong wind or an external force could easily knock on them out , for stability and strength they have strong large roots sometimes deeper than how tall the tree is . as in search for food and minerals they're roots grip on to the soil they are in and also develop root hairs , you know food and strength . As a tree holds such a large amount of soil the soil also benefits by having a firm protection from land erosion from mighty winds and heavy rains .
