"The Trees" by Adrienne Rich

The Trees is a thought provoking poem by the famous American poet and feminist Adrienne Rich.

The poem is highly symbolic. The captivity and confinement of trees in closed spaces in the house has made the forests empty.

The trees crave for their freedom and their space. They want to spread their branches and grow to full length in their birthplaces - the forests.

Trees thus stretch out their branches, break barriers and struggle hard to move out in the open in their natural environments.

The same happens with human beings . Every human being wants to break away from captivity and strive for freedom.

The trees symbolise the freedom loving nature of human beings. They represent women who are chained by  the burdens of society and the household. Every woman wants to spread herself outwards to explore this beautiful world but her freedom is restricted by the grips of society.

The poem thus highlights the urge for freedom through the 'trees' the extended metaphor of the poem.
