Most of the tribal people were dependent on forsts for their livelihood but under the new Forest Policy, the govt. Had put several restrictions on the people:

1. Closing the large forest area for tribal people.

2. Forcing the local people to contribute 'begar'.

3. Preventing people from entering the forests to graze their cattle and collect fuelwood and fruits.

4. They felt their right were denied so they revoltes.

5. When they heard of the swaraj movement thousands of them defied the authorities, left the plantations and headed towards their homes.

6. They have this misconception that now Gandhu Raj is coming and everyone would get land in their own villages.
