Answer: Yes, without gravity, the gas fill out the space evenly so you can get uniform distribution of gas. ... So the Earth can trap the gas even though it is not a closed container. In practice, gas in small container can be treated as uniformly distributed since the gravitational potential difference is small

Gas – In a gas, particles are in continual straight-line motion. The kinetic energy of the molecule is greater than the attractive force between them, thus they are much farther apart and move freely of each other. In most cases, there are essentially no attractive forces between particles.
