Independence Day in India is celebrated every year on 15 August as a national holiday when people remember the long event of our nation’s independence from British rule.

India gained independence on August 15 in 1947 after a lot of independence movement, during which many freedom fighters sacrificed their lives.

After independence, on August 17 in 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Indian Prime Minister to hoist the national flag at the Red Fort near Lahore Gate in Delhi.

Students, teachers, parents and others come together to celebrate Independence Day by hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem.

The tricolour national flag is also hosted by the Indian Prime Minister in the national capital New Delhi at the Red Fort.

A salute is then given with 21 cannons and tricolour flowers are flown by helicopter on the flag. The tricolour of our Flag represents saffron for courage and sacrifice, white for peace and truth, and green for faith and dignity.
