Leadership may be defined as a position of power held by an individual in a group, which provides him with an opportunity to exercise interpersonal influence on the group members for miobilising and directing their efforts towards certain goals. The leader is at the centre of group’s power structure, keeps the group together, infuses life into it, moves it towards its goals and maintains its momentum.
He may emerge in a group by virtue of his personality characteristics and qualities or by virtue of common consent by group members. In the latter case, the leader derives his power from the group members. He continues in the leadership position at the pleasure of group members collectively. Leadership position exists in most group settings irrespective of the size of the group.
For example, a leader of national or international standing commands widespread influence over a large number of people while the influence of the leader of a small work group in an organisation is very limited. Both are leaders in their own right and fulfill our definition of leadership.
Leadership is an influential process. The leader is in a position to shape, regulate, control and change the attitudes, behaviour and performance of his group members. The latter are supposed to comply with the former’s desires and directives and partially suspend their own judgment and discretion. There exists a particular relationship between the leader and his group members which is characterised by interpersonal and social interaction.
In a group, the leader and his followers play the roles expected of them and thereby seek to justify their respective positions. Some leaders may be able to play their role effectively whereby they succeed in getting the willing cooperation and commitment of their followers, beyond the normal call of duty.
I have always been hearing from everyone that
Leadership is all about taking responsibilities for our actions (the things that we do), accepting success and also facing failure sometimes. A leader, according to me should always take perspectives of others before coming up to a final conclusion or decision as everyone is equal. Like, a leader should hear everyone, take their perspective and then again think on it. It's just all about togetherness and not being alone.
Leadership over others make them feel that they're being supported and motivated by someone. They even feel safe under the guidance of their leaders. Leadership is like, it provides you a golden opportunity to help others being a bridge between other's goals and them. It is helping other people to rise to their full potential to achieve or accomplish their goals.
According to me, a leader should be a good listener, so that he/she can solve problems by getting to know the full situation. He/she should always be there to help his/her subordinates whenever they need. A leader should always be encouraging. He/ she should also know about there own weaknesses. Moreover, a leader should never do partiality and treat everyone equally! He/she should also always provide feedback. He/she should know how to manage even the worst situations. They should know how to build a good team.
A good leader is always open minded, filled with integrity, creativity and transperancy. He/she should also know how to talk effectively that can help people understand better!
I would also like to give an example of how and what a true leadership is! In our BS team, we have some leaders that lead us, Pran bhai, Swarup bhai, Hemantg, Kalpesh Bhai and CaptainBrainly. They are like, always ready to help others, whenever anyone needs them. They posses each and every quality that I've mentioned above and of course this is why they are our leaders. They are passionate and have respect towards others. They would have also faced problems in reaching where they are now! But still they never gave up and are on the top now as our leaders! :)
So, finally I would like to conclude that, a true leadership includes all the qualities and even the attention (focus) of the leader towards their everything that is going around.
