The basic geographic feature of Uttara Kannada district which is located in the Indian state of Karnataka is the Western Ghats which is also known as the Sahyadri range, which runs from north to south through the area. Payanghat is present between the western ghats and the sea which varies from 8 to 24 kilometres in width. Behind the coastal plain there are hills from 60 to 100 meters in height, and behind the hills are the ridges and peaks of the Sahyadris which are the western ghats.
