Try It Out
A hypothesis is a suggested explanation which can be
tested. For example, if you think that a solid dissolves in hot
water more quickly than in cold water, you may write your
hypothesis as: 'A solid dissolves more quickly in water of a
higher temperature than a lower temperature.'
In your group, write a hypothesis of one factor which affects
how fast a solid dissolves in water.
Plan a fair test to test your hypothesis. To conduct a fair
test, only one variable should be changed at a time.
Example: "estigate whether the temperature of water
affects hoolid dissolves in water:
Variable 007
Variables to ke
Temperature of the water
The type of solid
The amount of solid
The amount of water
The rate of stirring
The surface area of the solid
• Carry out the investigation and make careful observations/
measurements. Record the observations/measurements
and draw a conclusion from them. You may present your
observations/measurements in a table or in the form of a
graph. An example is shown below.
Temperature of water (°C) difference between
Time taken to dissolve a
teaspoon of sugar without
stirring (s)
