Me: Tell me about yourself sir?
Jawan: My name is harka Raj Rai. I am 45 yrs old. I stay at dikhtel(Hilly Regions of Nepal).
Me: When did you join Indian Army?
Harka Raj Sir: I joined in 1990.
Me: What inspired you to join Indian Army?
Harka Raj Sir: My father was in Indian army. Once I visited with my father to see about army lifestyle. I found it Very interesting so I also decided to join army. No doubt my father was biggest inspiration behind me joining army.
Me: Why Indian Army? Why Not Nepalese Army?
Harka Raj Sir: My father was in Indian army. So this is one of the biggest reason I joined Indian army. Beside this, there are more facilities compared to what we get in Nepalese army. Also, Indian government treated us equally. We are given same facilities as what Indian army get. At last, being army is all about serving people. It has nothing to do what nation you are serving. Our motto of life is to serve people.
Me: Tell me something about your training? How hard was it? Which place did you train from?
Harka Raj Sir: I did my training from Shillong. It was 11 Month hard Training. There were 40 people in my group from different states of India. It was tough training season. Language was biggest barrier. Everything was taught in Hindi. As I was from Nepal It was very difficult for me to understand Hindi. I failed in my first written exam. But after that I never looked back. I never failed in physical exam. As I was from hilly region of Nepal I already had survived overcoming many difficulties.
Me: Tell me about your placements? Where was your first posting and how was the experience?
Harka Raj Sir: After completing my training I got my first placing at Lucknow as a young soldier. I was placed ‘2/5GR (FF)’ Unit. (Fifth group, 2nd regiment of Gorkha Rifle- Frontier Force). There are all together 5 Groups. I did serve for 5 years as a young soldier. To be a trend solider everyone has to go through these 5 years of Intense training as a young soldier. During these 5 years I learned all the basics of war planning. I acquired basic knowledge of unit’s all weapons, after that learning armors, RTs,(Artillery), Ads(Air Defense), etc. It was great experience learning about weapons, learning about tanks, learning about war strategies etc. This was the most fun period. We also had many opportunities for promotion depending upon our skills. We were given so many facilities. We were never biased on the basis of caste and culture difference. We all were treated equally. I also had an opportunity to do a Joint training season with France and Nepalese army.
Me: Where are you placed now? And what is you rank?
Harka Raj Sir: As of now I am placed in J & K (Jammu & Kashmir) as a Subedar(lieutenant)
Me: Tell me about lifestyle of army People?
Harka Raj sir: Army people have own lifestyle. We are unit of people from different caste, culture, religion etc. We together celebrate all festivals. Our religion is Humanity. We are here to serve people. We love our profession.
Me: What facilities are you given?
Harka Raj sir: Apart from our basic salary we are also given allowances, medical facilities, Education allowances to children, Housing allowances etc. Not all this we can take 3 months leave in a year and also are allowed to take emergency leave as per need. Even after my retirement I will be given pension and all other facilities.
Me: Are you happy with your basic salary and facilities given to you?
Harka Raj sir: A men has unwanted desire. His wishes are many. He is never satisfied. Talking about me, I am very happy with all the facilities given to me. I being form Nepal I am treated equally. I am getting equal facilities what other army men are getting.
Me: What restrictions are there in army? Are you unhappy with any restrictions? What suggestion would you like to give?
Harka Raj sir: See, Defense is major part of any country. Any country in the world you serve, you have certain rules and regulation to follow. You can’t take chance with Nation’s Security System. You will never find complete freedom. Talking about me, I am perfectly happy with the rules and regulations. As being a concern citizen I respect all the rules and regulation and strictly abide by them. I don’t see anything that needs a change.
Me: Have you faced any war situation in your tenure?
Harka Raj sir: I was there in Kargil War (1999), as a defense army at J & K.
Me: Are you happy being an army? Would you inspire your children to join army?
Harka Raj sir: I am very happy being an army. I love my profession. Talking about my children, It is there’s choice what they want to be. I would definitely inspire them about army lifestyle. Rest is Up to them
