when we move into the dark room from bright light the eyes need time to adjust and both cones and rods participate in dark adaptation ,slowly increasing their sensitivity to light in dark environment ,cones adapt faster ,so the first few minutesof adaptation reflect cones meditated vision. Rods work slower at much lower level of illumination they take over after the initial cone meditated adaptation method.
