I would leave out the parts where the doctor is admiring himself in the mirror and thinking about his marriage. I would leave his plans to marry a rich fat doctor for a settled future. I would leave out the parts where the snake is modelling in front of the mirror admiring it's image from different angles. I would leave doctor's description of the dirty vest with holes which was the only thing not robbed by the thief.
