because tsunami occurs in seas so firstly when tsunami come into existence it mostly affects the areas (coastal areas) which are settled near seas....
BUT if the tsunami is so large , it can also affect the areas which are too far from coastal areas...
eg, Tsunami in year 2000 in orissa ...
