When the guard cells undergo photosynthesis , the ATP molecules are produced . This leads to the active transport of the potassium ions from the adjacent cells to the guard cells .

This makes the guard cells hypertonic and the surrounding cells ecome hypotonic . Now Osmosis takes place and water flows into the guard cell making it turgid .

Thus osmosis makes the cells turgid and the active transport increases the potassium ion concentration inside the cell so that osmosis takes place .
