Cilia:

Cilia are short, hair like appendages extending from the surface of a living cell.

Shorter than flagella.

Few hundreds are found per cell.

Found in Eukaryotic cells.

Play a role in locomotion, respiration etc.

Flagellar:

Flagella are long, thread like appendages on the surface of a living cell.

Longer than cilia.

Few (less than 10 per cell)

Found in both Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells.

Help in locomotion only.

Cilia and flagella are cell organelles that are structurally similar but are differentiated based on their function & length.

Similarity : Both are used for movement.

Dissimilarity : cilia are small as compared to flagella  & numerous in number, whereas flagella is larger in size as compared to flagella & usually 1 to 8 in number.

Example : cilia in paramecium and flagella in euglena.
