Let the number be = x

Twice a number added to 5 = 2x + 5

difference between that number and 2 = x - 2

Given that 2x + 5 = 21

x - 2 3

cross multiply

3(2x + 5) = 21(x - 2)

6x + 15 = 21x - 42

15 + 42 = 21x - 6x

57 = 15x

x = 57/15

x = 19/5
