This poem is a part of Alfred Edward Housman's poem collection called "A Shropshire Lad." In the poem Alfred talks about revisiting the youthful days of his life and how he played football through the winters to escape depression and sadness and keep his sorrows at bay.

Then comes spring in which he stands on the pitch to play cricket still fighting his grief and sorrows. He tries to tell us that how this little enjoyment from playing sports helps him escape his depression and sadness and tries to get him by through life.
