Correct Question :-

The distance between two cities, A and B, is 70 km. Two cars start moving from A and B respectively. If they move in the same direction, they will meet in 7 hours and if they move towards each other they will meet in 1 hour. Find the speed of

both the cars.

Given data :-

  • The distance between two cities, A and B, is 70 km.
  • Two cars start moving from A and B respectively.

Case 1 :- if they move in the same direction, they will meet in 7 hours.

Case 2 :- if they move towards each other they will meet in 1 hour.

Solution :-

{Formula : → speed = distance/time}

Let, speed of first car be x km/hr from city A and speed of second car be y km/hr from city B

Now, from case 1 :-

if they move in the same direction, they will meet in 7 hours.

Hence relative speed of first car and second car :

speed = distance/time

→ ( x - y ) = 70/7 {from given}

→ 7 ( x - y ) = 70

Divide both side by 7, we get

→ x - y = 10

→ x = 10 + y .....( 1 )

Now, from case 2 :-

if they move towards each other they will meet in 1 hour.

Hence relative speed of first car and second car :

speed = distance/time

→ ( x + y ) = 70/1 {from given}

→ ( x + y ) = 70 .....( 2 )

from eq. ( 1 ) put value of x in eq. ( 2 )

→ 10 + y + y = 70

→ 2y = 70 - 10

→ 2y = 60

→ y = 60/2

→ y = 30 {30 km/hr}

Put value of y in eq. ( 1 )

→ x = 10 + y

→ x = 10 + 30

→ x = 40 {40 km/hr}

Hence, speed of first car is 40 km/hr and speed of second car is 30 km/hr.
