hypotenuse is missing so,

use Pythagoras theorem

(Hypotenuse)²=(base)² + (height)²

we get hypotenuse

h²= 12² + 16²

h²= 144 + 256

h²= 200

h= 20

the planes are 20 miles apart from each other
