Alkane A will occur in gaseous state at room temperature and alkane B will occur in liquid state at room temperature.

Explanation:

  • General chemical formula of an alkane is C_{n}H_{2n+2}. When there are 4 carbon atoms present in an alkane then its chemical formula will be C_{4}H_{10}.
  • Hence, C_{4}H_{10} is butane. And, when there are 6 carbon atoms present in an alkane then its chemical formula is C_{6}H_{14}. Therefore, C_{6}H_{14} is hexane.
  • At room temperature, butane exists as a gas and its boiling point is -1^{o}C. Whereas hexane exists as a liquid at room temperature as its boiling point is between 50^{o}C to 70^{o}C.
