Two beakers A and B contain water, A contains hot water while B hot water. Some sugar crystals are just added to

both beakers without stirring. They are left undisturbed for some time.

a) What will happen to the sugar crystals after some time.
b) Which property of the liquid(water) is observed here.

Answer:

When crystals are added in a glass of cold and hot water, the following observations are observed:

i) In a glass of cold water, the crystals settle down to the bottom and in case of hot water, it slowly spreads. The crystals can be observed dissolving in the water just above and blue/ purple color is observed.

ii) After some time, the hot water becomes blue/purple and in cold water, no appreciable color change is observed because of less dissolution of crystals.

iii) From the above observation, we can conclude that particles of matter move continuously and possess kinetic energy. The particles of matter also have diffusion property.

iv) As the kinetic energy of particles depends on temperatures and increases with the increase of temperature. So, the rate of mixing also increases as observed in the case of hot and cold water.
