The thermal energy developed in this process is 3 KJ.

Explanation:

Let final velocity of combination be v towards initial direction of 20 Kg body.

According to equation of conservation of momentum.

(20)^2 -  (10)^2 = 30 V

400 - 100 = 30 v

300 = 30 V

V = 300 / 30

V = 10

  • From conservation of the energy.

1/2 [ 20 x (20)^2 + 10 x 10^2 ] = H + 1/2 [ 30 x (10)^2]

1/2 [ 8000 + 1000 ] = H + 1/2 (3000)

9000 / 2 - 3000 /2 = H

H = 6000 / 2

H = 3000 J

H = 3 KJ

Thus the thermal energy developed in this process is 3 KJ.
