Two blocks are connected by a string as shown in the diagram. The upper block is hung by another string. A force F applied on the upper string produces an acceleration of
2m/s2 in the upward direction in both the blocks. If
T and T' be the tensions in the two parts of the string, then

consider the two blocks as one.

force equation for the motion of the combination is given as

F - (m₁ + m₂) g = (m₁ + m₂) a

T = (m₁ + m₂) (g + a)

inserting the values

T = (2 + 4) (9.8 + 2)

T = 70.8 N

consider the motion of the lower block

T' - m₁ g = m₁ a

T' = m₁ (g + a)

inserting the values

T' = 4 (9.8 + 2)

T' = 47.2 N
