Two blocks of masses 10 kg and 20 kg are placed on the x-axis. The first mass is moved on the axis by a distance of 2 cm. By what distance should the second mass be moved to keep the position of the center of mass unchanged.

Thanks for asking the question!

ANSWER::

Two masses m₁ and m₂ are kept on X-axis.

m₁=10 kg                 m₂= 30 kg
x₁ = 2 cm                   x₂ = ?

m₁ is displaced by a distance of 2 cm.

Centre of mass = (m₁x₁+m₂x₂) / (m₁+m₂)

0 = (10x2+20x₂) / (10+20)

0 = (20+20x₂) / 30

0 = 20+20x₂

x₂ = -20 /20

x₂ = -1

So , m₂ should be displaced by a distance 1 cm towards left so , as to keep the position of centre of mass unchanged.

Hope it helps!
