Two masses m (1) and m (2) are kept in a vertical line

m (1) = 10 kg, m (2) =3 kg

The first block is raised through a height of 7 cm.

The center of mass raised by 1 cm.

∴1 = \frac{m_{1}y_{1}+m_{2}y_{2}  }{m_{1}+m_{2}  }

    =  \frac{10*7+3*y_{2}}{40}

    = 70+3*\frac{y_{2}}{40}

    → 70+3y_{2} = 40

    → 3y_{2} = -30

    → y_{2} = -10

The 3 kg body should be displaced 10 cm downward in order to raise the center of mass through 1 cm.
