Two blocks P and Q of masses m1 = 2 kg and m2 = 3 kg respectively are placed in contact with each other on horizontal frictionless surface. Some external force F = 10 N is applied to the block P in the direction parallel to the surface. Find the following (a) acceleration of the blocks (b) force which the block P exerts on block Q.

QUESTION --- Two blocks P and Q of masses m1 = 2 kg and m2 = 3 kg respectively are placed in contact with each other on horizontal frictionless surface. Some external force F = 10 N is applied to the block P in the direction parallel to the surface. Find the following (a) acceleration of the blocks (b) force which the block P exerts on block Q.

ANSWER
___________________________

2 Blocks of Masses P and Q

P = m1 = 2kg
Q = m2 = 3 kg

Force = 10 N

____________________________

Total Acceleration of the system =
Force / Total mass

Acceleration = 10 / (2+3)

Acceleration = 10/5

(a) Acceleration = 2 m/sec ^2

___________________________

Force exerted by Block P on Q

=> Mass of Q × Acceleration produced in Q

=> 3 kg × 2 m/sec ^2

=> 6 N

Because this force will only produce Acceleration in the Block Q
___________________________

ANSWER =
(a) 2 m/sec ^2
(b) 6 N
